Consolidated Communications warns against e-mail scam

MATTOON – Consolidated Communications is reminding its customers to not respond to e-mails or Web sites asking for their personal information.

Scam e-mails and Web sites often ask users for personal or account information.   One such message currently circulating claims to be sent from Consolidated Communications and warns of disconnection of services if the user fails to respond with personally identifiable information.

These scams are a form of Internet fraud referred to as “phishing.” Phishing is the fraudulent process of attempting to acquire personal information such as user names, passwords and credit card details by posing as a trusted company or organization.

Rob Koester, Senior Manager, Broadband Services, urges customers to ignore any such requests. “Consolidated Communications will never ask its customers for personal account information through an e-mail. Unfortunately phishing is a widespread problem. As a general rule you should never give personal information such as user names, passwords, credit card information or date of birth unless you are absolutely certain that the information request is from a trusted source.”
